The Inaugural Edition
The Annual Law Series could hardly have had a more auspicious beginning in 2007, having been organised as part of the events to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Perchstone & Graeys, its admission of a new partner and the formal launch of the firm’s purpose built office premises.
This celebratory backdrop provided the ambience for the deep yet insightful discussions which characterized this edition. The event spanned a two day period, with each patented with a distinctive theme woven round the key drivers, challenges and legislations impacting the Nigerian economy, and featured a robust cast of speakers such as Mr. Gbite Adeniji, a former partner with Aelex; Mr. Tony Elumelu, former GMD/CEO United Bank for Africa Plc; Dr. Koyin Ajayi, SAN, and Mr. Gbenga Biobaku, the Managing Partners of Olaniwun Ajayi and Gbenga Biobaku & Co, respectively.
The second day focused on the pressing issues of the administration of justice in Nigeria. The discussions were ably led by then Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State, Mr. Supo Shasore SAN, who spoke on the need for specialized judges to deal with the increasing complexities in corporate/commercial litigation. Other speakers included Prof. Itse Sagay, SAN and Mr. Tunde Fagbohunlu, SAN.
Such was the overwhelming positive feedback generated by these discussions that it persuaded its authors to subsequently institutionalize it as a non-paying annual event – now known as – the Annual Law Series (ALS) which then and till date is committed to deepening the interface between the Law, Economics and Public Policy.
Several editions later, a likely judgement is that we have remained wedded to this founding idea.
