The 2nd Annual Law Series
With the onset of what became known as the global financial crises; the 2008 edition of the Annual Law Series sought to examine the key legal aspects of the different financing alternatives for funding infrastructural projects in emerging economies. It chose the theme, Legal and related challenges in funding infrastructural projects in emerging economies. The ensuing discussions considered contemporary financial instruments including securitization and other derivatives, the immense value such instruments bring to an emerging market and the ability of such instruments to connect the capital and housing markets; banking and insurance sectors, as well as the private equity and bond markets.
Prof. Graham Penn, a partner with Sidley Austin LLP led the discussions which had other prominent resource persons including former Chairman of the FIRS Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui- Okaura; Alhaji Suleiman Barau, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Mr. Sonnie Ayere, MD, UBA Global Markets.
A notable outcome from the deliberations is the process which led to the draft Bill on Securitization currently before the Nigerian National Assembly.
